3 Bars Fels-naptha soap - $3
1 4lb, 12 oz box of Borax - $4
1 4lb box Baking Soda - $3
1 55oz box Super Washing Soda - $3
1 small tub of oxyclean - $4
Total: $17
Directions:
1. Grate the bars of Fels-naptha using a cheese grater or food processor.
2. Dump it in a trash bag.
3. Add the rest of the ingredients.
4. Mix it up.
5. Pour it in whatever container you desire.
How to use:
Pour 1 - 2 Tablespoons of detergent into your washing machine. If you have an HE machine, still use 1 -2 tablespoons, but make sure you pour it directly into the drum, not into the dispenser.
Handy Tip: The scoop that comes in the oxyclean jar is equal to 2 tablespoons.
I have no idea how long this detergent will last. According to the blog where I got the recipe, she did around 8 loads of laundry a week for 9 months using just one batch of soap, and mentions she uses 2 tbs a load. That is around 290 loads of laundry for only $17, just 5 cents a load!! Compare that to All Laundry Detergent at 12 cents a load, and Tide at 18 cents a load. I think I like the savings!

| My new washing line-up. In case you were wondering, I use the vinegar to de-stink DJ's diapers every few weeks. |
I did pour some of the soap (without oxyclean) into a smaller container for DJ's cloth diapers. I'm hoping that even though the Fels-naptha contains some fragrance, this laundry detergent will be cloth diaper friendly. It will take me a few washings to see if the diapers react well or poorly.
I'll do a follow-up in a few weeks to let you all know how the soap works for us. Let me know in the comments if you try it out, and what your experience is!

Husband's mom made some of this when we were living with her. It claims to be safe for sensitive skin, but the fragrance in the Fels Naptha made me break out like nobody's business. But, that's because I'm allergic to almost all fragrances. His mom never had a problem with it, though, and she has really super sensitive skin.
ReplyDeleteI bet you could use any brand of bar laundry soap, but it might be a struggle to find one completely fragrance free. I was actually extremely suprised to walk into the Walmart and find the Fels-naptha with no problems, but that was the only bar laundry soap that they sold.
