Outside.

What a day.

DJ, David, and I spent a few hours at Sunset Park today. A girl I went to high school with lives out here, and her son turned 2 the other day. They had a party for him today. DJ was EVERYWHERE. I blinked, and he took off at a run. Not necessarily with a destination in mind; he just wanted to explore what the park had to offer.

It is starting to really heat up here in San Diego. I was glad, because that meant that DJ could play in the water spouts at the park. He had an absolute blast! I think he may be part fish. And part tank, as well. This kid will bulldoze through anything. And if he falls - no problem. He gets back up and dusts himself off, only to take off running somewhere else. It wears me out.

I can't help but take pride in his love for the outdoors. Yes, DJ watches television off and on throughout the day. But he would gladly go outside for a walk rather than sit inside with the television all day. It brings me back to my younger years, when:

The street lights were curfew. You better be home right after they turn on, or face punishment.
A whistle was how you knew your parents wanted you, not a cell phone.
It was a big deal when a family on the street bought a new appliance. The box was the best toy EVER.
It wasn't unusual to drive down the street, only to have to wait for the baseball/kickball/hockey game to clear out of the way before your car could pass.
We used to beg our parents to let us stay out after dark to catch lightening bugs.
Bushes and trees were great hiding places for Hide-and-Seek or Man Hunt.

Being a kid was so much fun. I hope DJ has all of the experiences I did as a child.
