David and I took DJ to Red Lobster last night.
Now that we have a baby, our time frame for going out to eat has changed dramatically. Where before we were waiting 45 minutes for a table with other young couples, we wait 5 min with the older, wiser generations. I'm not complaining, either. The service suffers a bit, as the other customers take a bit more of the server's time with questions and needs. But it is peaceful, and DJ loves being the center of attention.
Last night, every older person who walked by sent a wave or a smile DJ's way, and he returned their attention with enthusiastic smiles. His squeals of delight weren't met with distasteful stares of childless couples, but with grins and appreciation for young life. His antics were the talk of other tables; people would speculate whether Mom or Dad would catch the stuffed elephant before DJ decided to drop it on the floor.
While most people would scoff at having to sit where we were seated, it was the perfect spot for a couple with a social baby. We were right in front of the entrance to the kitchen. DJ loved watching the servers "disappear" into the depths of the kitchen. He devoured the cheddar biscuits, and didn't cry until we were in the car on the way home.
It is possible to go out to dinner with a baby and enjoy yourself. We had a great time last night. And what's better - There are leftovers for breakfast today!
