I have hit another milestone in the "First time Momma" journey: An unnecessary trip to the ER/Doctor's office. DJ had been sick for a week or so, and was just seeming to get over the brunt of it. Thursday morning, I unzipped his sleeper to change his diaper and discovered...
A Rash.
I figured maybe he was just having a reaction to sleeping on his tummy or something. No biggie. But a few hours later, it had spread to his entire upper body, and was threatening to creep up his neck and onto his arms. I know you experienced Mommas are screaming "Don't worry! It's normal!". Wish I would have known that.
I called David, seeking his advice. We decided a Doctor's visit was necessary. Not necessarily the ER, but someone needed to look at him. I called the Naval Hospital appointment line, and was informed that they had no available slots. Now, this is why I very rarely take DJ to the doctor unless it is a scheduled appointment. I had a Momma question why I switched DJ to milk without consulting his Doctor. Well, it would have taken me 3 weeks to get an appointment. There is no such thing as walking in at the Naval Hospital. I could have emailed his primary care physician, but the last time I did that, it took a month to get a response.
Anyway, David and I decided the emergency room was our only option. After waiting there for forever, we finally got called back to get his vitals taken. I explained to the nurse what was going on, and how I was hoping to get him in to Family Practice, but they had nothing open. She said she would try, and after waiting another hour we were informed that we had an appointment at 1330 (in 5 minutes), so we should high-tail it over there. We waited there for 30 minutes, only to be told that it was a simple viral rash, totally normal for babies getting over a cold.
Drive time: 40 minutes
Wait time in ER: 2 hours
Time spent in Family Practice: 1 hour
Drive home: 40 minutes
Feeling like an overreacting mother, but having peace of mind: Worth every minute.
